For Thanksgiving this year we spent it in Tucson, AZ with my wife's family. Rather than flying out we took Amtrak trains in sleeper cars. From Boston, MA to Chicago, IL we took the Lake Shore Limited.
When you get the Bedroom from Amtrak you have a stow-able chair across from the larger bench.
Whichever direction the train is moving you can have a seat in the direction of travel for at least one of the passengers.
Holly was laying across two thirds of the bench.
You have your own private bathroom with shower and towels provided.
Shower controls and so on.
This being a Viewliner train (these are used on trains that go into and out of New York city because Superliner, which are double decker, do not fit) has two sets of windows which make for a very bright and airy interior.
We also have a bunk bed to provide sleeping space for up to three occupants in this room. The lower benches provide the equivalent of a full bed.
With the extra height provided there is a storage wrack above the hallway and above the bathroom.
The Bedroom was significantly more roomy than the Roomette we have traveled on before and we really enjoyed it.
The included meals on the Lake Shore Limited are prepackaged for dinner. For Holly this was fine. For me, by the time we met our Dining Car in Rensselaer, NY it was out of vegetarian meals. I had tried to reserve one when we reserved the trip, before the trip, at the station, and with our sleeping car attendant... Amtrak refused / was incapable of doing so on any of these occasions and so when it came to our dinner reservation I got to eat instant oatmeal. This was rather disappointing. Keep in mind that renting sleeper cars includes a sizable price increase over coach and includes meals. It was a very disappointing meal.
