Minuteman Bikeway - September 2018

We took a bike ride up the Minuteman Bikeway from Alewife Station to the end at Depot Park in Bedford, MA. While it was a bit hot that day the shade along the trail kept us comfortable. My co-worker joined us on the ride, it was his first time on a touring bike. At Depot Park I took a few photos.
The end of the Minuteman Bikeway is a rail depot.
They have a preserved Boston & Maine RDC (Rail Diesel Car). This type of train car has a diesel engine connected to an electric motor that drives all the amenities and electric motors for the car. Multiple of these can be hooked up as Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) to form longer self propelled trains without an electric (third rail or overhead) system for power.
These trains allowed branch service to be maintained economically on lines that did not have a ton of passengers.

Depot Park has some nice displays about the trails, where the rails were, and about the train car itself.

Depot park acts as a turn around for those who do not want to continue down another one of the trails. There are benches to sit on and places to lock your bike.
